There are many different jobs within the sustainability and green jobs industry. The ever-changing diversity of this field makes it incredibly flexible to those with many different backgrounds.

Join our panel discussion with industry experts to explore the industry of sustainability and the growing career opportunities within. Local BC residents with experience across the field will share their insights, career background and how the world of sustainability continues to evolve.

Meet our speakers:

Alex Johansen - Visual Environmental Educator and Sustainability Curator

Alex is a visual environmental educator and sustainability curator with seven years of experience in interpretation and science education. With a M.A.Ed in Urban Environmental Education looking at the intersection of environmental justice and the urban landscape, Alex has collaboratively managed program development, exhibit curation and content creation on topics from stormwater to risky play. Her interests lie in facilitating placemaking, especially as it connects to the history of a place, and community climate resilience. Alex’s intentional approach to projects and research background, combined with a love of whimsy, ensure unique, engaging products. 

Michelle Austin - Impact Strategy Consultant

As an Impact Strategy Consultant, Michelle is an enthusiastic disrupter to business-as-usual. She is able to critically examine the big challenges faced by today’s society, while daring to demonstrate how regenerative solutions are possible here and now. Her background is in food sustainability, which has bolstered her ability to align climate justice with economic objectives, and has prepared her for the work needed to seed impact and cultivate its growth! With less than a decade left on the climate clock, Michelle is eager to help big and small businesses be a force for good.

Lina Gomez - Director of Sustainability & Solutions

Lina works as the Director of Sustainability & Solutions at Debrand Services. From recommerce through to fiber reclamation, she supports Debrand’s clients in identifying next or end of life solutions for their products. Lina works closely with clients to develop value recovery strategies tailored to their brand, sustainability objectives, and garment materiality. Prior to her role at Debrand, Lina spent several years working in international trade and logistics. Outside of work, you can find Lina running, biking, or split boarding in the North Shore mountains with her Border Collie, Cooper.

Meet our moderator:

Ky Sargeant

Ky is a 5th year HR/Entrepreneurship student who has dedicated her time to studying and furthering equity, diversity, and inclusion in business. She is actively involved in assisting administration at the UBC Sauder School of Business on EDI issues and created new services to support other LGBTQ2+ students. Outside of their studies, they facilitate education sessions on inclusive culture and gender diversity in the workplace.
