YWiB SFU Launch Review
/On Friday October 8th, the YWiB Events team hosted the 2021 YWiB Launch event open to all SFU students.
The evening began with an introduction from the Events team and the YWiB Presidents, followed by the participants getting a chance to show their spirit by using event-themed Zoom backgrounds!
After going through the plan for the night, attendees were assigned to breakout rooms where they engaged in a speed-friending icebreaker. The instructions were simple:
Breakout rooms were to have 4-5 members;
The task at hand was to to get to know every single member of the group; and
The questions would get increasingly deeper and more personal as time went on
And thus, the 20-minute icebreaker began! As mentioned, the questions started off relatively light and simple, with members being asked to share their names, years, and faculties or concentrations, followed by being asked about a song they listened to most recently. The later and more deeper question asked participants to mention a quality that they appreciated in others, something they wanted to achieve in their lifetime, and something that they were thankful for.
Following the icebreaker was an introduction to the main event of the night: The Pitch-Off.
Participants were broken out into different breakout rooms and assigned a random item which they had to create a sales pitch for. They were encouraged to be creative, use any format that they wished to, and keep their presentation two minutes long at most.
Creativity was certainly required as the items each team needed to pitch required fresh and out-of-the-box thinking!
From grassy-flip flops, to tinfoil hats, bacon band-aids, and many, many more fun items, participants of YWiB’s launch had a blast coming up with some incredible presentations filled with puns, gifs, and catchy mottos. In the end, it was the group pitching finger-hands that emerged victorious.
Scattered throughout the event were raffle prizes for gift cards and gift certificates. Attendees also received Red Bull as favours.
As the event drew to a close, everyone was given an opportunity to network with those from similar or different faculties and concentrations through the use of breakout rooms. Participants asked each other about their jobs, co-ops, volunteering, and their experiences. Other indepth and invaluable discussions pertaining to extracurricular activities, career aspirations, and post-secondary advice also arose.
Overall, the YWiB Launch event was an engaging, fun, and inspiring experience where many students across different concentrations and fa
