Event Recap: Failing Forward in 2020
/Our first Network + Learn event of the 2020 was held January 30th at one of our favourite venues. We love Mum’s the Word for it’s intimate setting, friendly staff, and super cool art.
This sold-out event brought the ever-expanding YWiB Toronto community back together after the holidays. It was great to reunite with old friends and make new ones as well!
We were lucky to have Nicole Figueiredo as our event photographer once again. Don’t see your photo in this recap? Follow us on Instagram for more awesome pictures of this event and ones to come.
Learning Time
Chivon John captivated the room with her thoughts on ‘Failing Forward’ in your personal and professional life. She shared some of her personal journey as well as powerful truths she’s learned along the way. Chivon reminded us that failure is inevitable, but never final if we refuse defeat.
If you’re still compiling your 2020 reading list, Chivon recommends 'Everything is Figureoutable' by Marie Forleo. She loves this book because it explores the concept of looking for progress, not perfection. Chivon encouraged us to see perfection as tied to fear of failure, which is draining and unproductive. We should focus on having faith in our capabilities.
Some key takeaways;
“A failure is an event; not a character trait.” - Chivon John
“You are not your last mistake.”- Chivon John

Event Giveaways
Our event sponsors made sure no one went home empty-handed. Shoppers Drug Mart King West donated overstuffed gift baskets for our speaker and one lucky winner, Kairavi Shah!
As well, Benefit Cosmetics gifted samples of their velvet powder foundation to everyone. Our friend Alana Ruoso spoke on behalf of Benefit, introducing the brand and the evening’s awesome product giveaways.
Open Stage Time
Our popular ‘pitch yourself’ opportunity was a hit once again! Over 10 women pitched pitched their businesses, themselves, or their services. This included a few attendees who weren't planning on pitching but left their comfort zone to put themselves out there.
Speaking in front of everyone takes courage, but it’s a lot easier when you’re speaking to other young women professionals who support you.
