For Immediate Release: BC Champions Recognized with International Awards

August 2, 2011 Vancouver, BC:  The International Alliance for Women (TIAW), a global umbrella organization uniting professional women and their networks, has announced the 2011 winners of its prestigious World of Difference 100 Awards. This year, eight exceptional individuals from British Columbia have been internationally recognized for their work promoting and supporting the advancement of women in business. The 2011 awards recognize 100 achievers from 27 countries for their efforts in advancing the economic empowerment of women locally, regionally or worldwide.  The 22 Canadians honoured in this year’s awards also included Senator Céline Hervieux-Payette of Quebec, in the Public Service /Government category and Charles Coffey, O.C.,  currently Co-Chair, Aboriginal Human Resource Development Council of Canada and retired Executive Vice President, Government and Community Affairs President, RBC Financial Group, who was named in the Male Champions category.

This is the second time anyone from BC has made the list since the awards’ inception in 2008, when Doreen McKenzie-Sanders was recognized for her work creating the Women in the Lead Directory of qualified women candidates for appointment to corporate boards.  That same year, Sarmite Bulte, former Toronto-based MP and founder of the Women Entrepreneurs of Canada, was awarded for her advocacy of women’s rights.

Every year, TIAW invites nominations in several different categories. Award categories include Education, Community, Entrepreneurial, Non-profit, and Public Service/Government.  This year, Young Women Leaders, Male Champions of Women’s Economic Empowerment, and Corporations were added to the list. Hundreds of nominations were received from all continents, from which the top 100 were selected. The 2011 awards to the BC recipients were granted in the following categories (in alphabetical order):

  • Laurel Douglas, CEO of Women’s Enterprise Centre, in the Education category;
  • Jill Earthy, CEO of the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs (FWE), in the Community category;
  • Bob Elton, Chair of the Board of Governors of Simon Fraser University, in the Male Champion of Women’s Economic Empowerment category;
  • Paulina Lipska, President of Young Women in Business (YWIB), as a Young Women Leader <25;
  • Anne Lippert, Principal of Anne Lippert Consulting, in the Corporate (Individual Women) category;
  • Barbara Mowat, President of Impact Communications, in the Entrepreneurial category;
  • Michelle Pockey, Partner at the law firm Fasken Martineau, in the Entrepreneurial category;  and
  • Jennifer Sung, Vice President, Young Women in Business (YWIB), as a Young Women Leader <25.

Bob Elton, who serves on several boards, including the Minerva Foundation for BC Women, has this to say about being one of the first male recipients of the award: “It is great to see so many BC recipients recognized for this award, and I'm proud to be in this company.  All parts of our society, including business, clearly benefit from having a mix of men and women working together.”

Anne Lippert, a veteran corporate director who provides philanthropy consulting services, notes the benefits of investing in women and giving back.  “We’re very fortunate in BC to have such a supportive environment for women, and so many committed leaders who work together for the benefit of all,” remarks Lippert.

Commenting on the high levels of cooperation between many of the BC women’s business organizations represented with these awards, Jill Earthy of the FWE, a leading association of women business owners, adds, “I think it is truly extraordinary the level of support and collaboration we all share”.

Michelle Pockey, who in 1997 founded and serves as National Chair of the Professional Women’s Network, which celebrates its 15th anniversary in 2011 notes, “I’m very honoured to stand alongside some of Canada's most dedicated champions of women in business as a 2011 recipient of the TIAW World of Difference 100 Awards.”

Barbara Mowat, who is also Chapter Chair of three Women President’s Organization groups in Vancouver, highlights the impact of the awards:  “This international recognition inspires us and strengthens our resolve to continue empowering women to their business success.”

Laurel Douglas of Women’s Enterprise Centre, which provides loans, training and business advisory services to BC women business owners, concurs.  “Our organizations all work together closely, partnering on events and initiatives.  I believe this award will encourage even greater collaboration.”

Some of the successful collaborative initiatives co-hosted by these organizations include the Leadership Lessons from Influential Women in Business conference in October 2010, the Connecting to Contracts Workshop in April 2011, and the Embracing Award Opportunities seminar in June 2011.

Young Women in Business leaders Paulina Lipska and Jennifer Sung add: “It’s so encouraging to be part of a community in Vancouver where all the women networks and leaders truly support the younger generation. We’re very excited to see how the future female leaders will continue to create positive change.”

The 2011 TIAW World of Difference 100 Awards will be presented to the recipients on October 27, 2011 at the Canadian Embassy in Washington DC as part of the annual TIAW Global Forum.

congratulations to YWiB prez & vice-prez

We are so excited, over-the-moon, ecstatic and thrilled at the announcement of the recipients of The International Alliance for Women 2011 World of Difference 100 Awards. The 2011 awards recognize 100 achievers from 27 countries for their efforts in advancing the economic empowerment of women locally, regionally, or worldwide.The 22 Canadians honored in this year's awards include (drumroll please!) YWiB President Paulina Lipska and Vice-President Jennifer Sung in the Young Women Leaders category! We are so proud of Paulina and Jennifer! For the past three years they have been the inspiration and motivation for YWiB's initiatives as well as so many others. Where would YWiB be without Paulina and Jennfer...that remains to be unknown, but it definitely wouldn’t be what it is today – the go-to organization for young women in Vancouver, and internationally recognized as a model for brining women together in an environment that encourages women to push their boundaries and to build their stories to share with the world. The YWiB story is full of bumps, jumps and trying ‘til we succeed moments. But the moments that stand out are the ones where Paulina and Jennifer said ‘we’re going for it’, regardless of what anyone else was telling us. Their energy and passion has motivated the team through some of the biggest challenges we’ve faced as students, and as young professionals. Paulina and Jennifer lead the team with all their hearts. “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” – Theodore Roosevelt

it's been awhile

You must be wondering where we've been lately. No noise from YWiB in the last few months almost at all. Silence. We're stll here, just on an extended pow-wow session if you will. You see, we're constantly in a state of "how can we make this better"? And that's where we're at right now, working on making this (the network) better for the young women in Vancouver looking for a place to connect and get inspired.

We promise you'll hear from us soon with an exciting roll-out of new ways for you to get involved, either as a participant or coordinator. But that's all the hints we're going to leave you with for now.

Talk to you soon! We promise!

- the YWiB team

YWiB UBC - love, from Kiran

With the end of another great year comes the opportunity to look back on successes, milestones and memories. 2010/11 was nothing short of action packed for YWiB UBC! We continued to strive to be the central forum at UBC to connect women of all faculties with unique professional and personal development opportunities. This year marked our 3rd year at UBC where we saw an increase in membership and most importantly and increase in member engagement. Kicking off the year in style with our biggest event to date- our Launch Party and Fashion Show brought together members, supporters and the UBC community to watch a complete Fashion Show featuring looks from local Vancouver boutiques. The year continued with great events including our Professional Development Workshop Series, Entrepreneurship Panel and 3rd Annual Sweet Speed Networking event. Of course, no year is complete with our annual dose of inspiration from Beyond Pink 2010!

Over the course of Reading Week 2011, our first annual Career Tours Program was launched- the only program of its kind offered to UBC students. Small groups of YWiB UBC members had the opportunity to participate in exclusive informational interviews and tours of Fasken Martineau LLP, The Vancouver Sun and Weyerhaeuser.  Members gained first hand insights into career opportunities, working environment and company culture.

The summer of 2010 marked the launch of our new Internship Program, providing members with unique internship opportunities with local Vancouver companies matched to their needs and career goals. Participants were able to prepare for their internships through a specifically tailored workshop series.

This year marked our first time ever having a membership base of young women from each of the faculties at UBC. We are proud to have successfully launched two great new programs, and continued to fulfill the needs of young women in all faculties. We anticipate bigger events and programs in the coming year and invite all UBC students to get involved. Congratulations to the new executive team and congratulations to YWiB SFU and UVic on their accomplishments this past year.  On behalf of the 2010/11 executive team, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all our members, supporters, and mentors for another great year!

YWiB SFU looks back on an amazing year...

YWiB SFU is wrapping up its second year with many reasons to celebrate. Not only did YWiB SFU double its membership, it also inspired social change with the launch of a new social entrepreneurship program, all while earning the reputation of the “classiest club on campus”. Here are a few of our favourite highlights from the year!

Wine Social – With the expertise of wine connoisseur Richard Goodine, our members were treated to a wine tasting at Glowbal Group’s Society Restaurant and Lounge. This was the perfect way for members to get to know one another and learn about proper wine etiquette in a professional setting… a skill any busy savvy girl should know.

Project GIVE – Project GIVE (Generating Innovative Visions of Social Entrepreneurship) was launched as a platform to inspire our members to use business skills for social good. What we didn’t anticipate was how blown away we would be by the participants’ enthusiasm and support from the local social entrepreneurship community. The program definitely succeeded in producing an impressive group of future leaders and changemakers.

International Women’s Day mini-conference – When International Women’s Day rolled around we wanted to join in and celebrate how far women have come in the professional world. However, we also wanted to acknowledge the fact that women still have many opportunities to grow. It was great to hear from a dynamic panel of industry professionals who debated and challenged gender differences, communication in the workplace, challenges unique to women, the idea of work/life balance, and the role of women in tomorrow’s workplace

Beyond P!nk 2010 – YWiB SFU members represented big time at YWiB’s annual conference and it was clear that everyone left feeling inspired after hearing from the wonderful Bob Elton, Jillian Walker, Ken Sim and many other notable speakers. Beyond P!nk also provided the perfect opportunity for some quality member bonding time and hotel room dance parties!

On behalf of the YWiB SFU I’d like to extend a huge THANK YOU to all of our mentors and supporters. Each and every one of you has helped make YWiB SFU’s second year a great success!

happy birthday to me...today I am 3!

Grab corkscrew. Open red wine. Pour. Raise glass. Begin toast… Wow. It’s been three years since YWiB was an idea being shared amongst girlfriends. It’s been three years since YWiB supporter Fiona Walsh told Paulina we were “f***ing crazy” for attempting to organize Beyond Pink 2008 in just three months (which we did). It’s been three years since we began our journey to support young women in Vancouver. And what an incredible three years it’s been.

As we prepare to celebrate YWiB’s third birthday party on May 4th (which coincidentally happens to be my 23rd birthday), I thought I’d take the time to highlight a few of our favourite moments, complete with photos. They are in no particular order, so ignore the numbers, they don't mean anything.

1. what I need help with?/what can I help you with boards from BP08

These boards made their first appearance at BP08 and have been a staple at every conference following.  We LOVE that they allow women from all backgrounds, ages, areas of interest, to connect with each other – after all, isn’t that what women do best? Connect and share and support each other.

2. la famiglia YWiB

The YWiB family. Enough said. This inspiring team of women re-grouped after Beyond Pink 2008 to define the network’s future and forge the way for more young women to get involved. Much love, long nights, and bottles of wine have been shared brainstorming ideas and planning the events and programs for the organization.

3. tough love and inspiring conversations

Exploring Purple, where pink meets blue. The rebuttal to the all-male panel session was by far a fan-favourite of all our events. We still find ourselves quoting Chris Flett, “if you’re going to cry, go to the women’s room – it’s what it’s for”. Or being inspired by Cybele Negris who said, “You may be passionate about tea, but that doesn’t mean that you have to run a tea store. Maybe you’re not passionate about serving tea. You have to be passionate about what you do everyday.” What are some of your favourite qotes? Send them in!

4. What we fondly refer to as the “YWiB Magic”

That little something that’s different that makes the event, evening or interaction special. No stuffy atmospheres or stiff formalities. With us, you’re family. My favourite? The live artists that served as “decorations” at the Connect! Women in Business Tradeshow at Beyond Pink 2008. They had so much fun painting in the large ballroom and we had fun watching them as we passed by on our way to network with the next entrepreneur. Just one of many magical moments.

5. our amazing supporters.

How could we have possibly done this without you? Whether it was a harsh kick in the a** to get us moving, or inspirational words to keep us moving, or a new idea we hadn’t thought of, our supporters have been our rock (or rocks?) that we have relied on for so much. We are so grateful and no corny hallmark card poem can ever express how indebted we feel to our biggest supporters. Much love to you all.
