Passion, Chaos, and Dreams- Important Lessons Learned By Young Women At Beyond Pink Conference

VANCOUVER, B.C. (November 22, 2010)- What a spectacle it was to see as over 150 women dominated the Four Seasons Vancouver hotel this weekend to prove that beauty and brains make the perfect combination. Reason for the occasion? The third annual Beyond Pink conference hosted by the Young Women in Business Society (YWiB). Delegates came from all over the Lower Mainland to learn how to “make their brand and leave their mark.”The impressive line-up of speakers included Michelle Rupp (Principal and Founder,Lighthouse Leadership), Ken Sim (Co-Founder of Nurse Next Door), Lisa Vogt (Partner of McCarthy Tétrault LL), and Judy Brooks (Co-Founder of Blo Blow Dry Bar), all whom shared their stories and lessons that they have learned on their way to success. Ken Sim began one of his workshops by asking the ladies to stand up and proposed the question, "What would you do if you only had 30 days left on this planet, would you continue to live the way you are now?" The ladies who answered “yes” were asked to sit down. Only two women sat down. He then continued to teach the important lesson of following your passion when choosing a career path. The Power Couple Panel brought together Gayla and John DeHart, Katie Dunsworth-Reiach and Nick Reiach, and Andrea and Chris Scott, three power couples of Vancouver. They were all proven examples of an ideal work-life balance sharing their knowledge and experience to an audience of aspiring women. As the couples discussed about stress and chaos in life, John Dehart noted, "The common bond where you focus on a vision makes the chaos more manageable.” You could almost see the hearts melting in the crowd of women as his wife Gayla DeHart later added "we don't know the specifics or details...But we do know we're going to get through anything together." As the weekend came to an end, the ladies gathered one last time at the celebratory Gala dinner. In consideration of the goal of Beyond Pink, a platform that pushes young womento their dreams, one of the Gala Speakers, Tsawwassen First Nation, Chief Kim Baird left the delegates with some food for thought as she asked, "What is your dream, and what are you going to do about it?" These young women then walked out Saturday night knowing that they are going to do something to make their brand and leave their mark on the world.

Support. There are many organizations out there that can be a valuable resource for you. The Countdown to Beyond Pink 2010

With less than a week left to Beyond Pink, you wouldn't believe the amount of emails that have been flying back and forth between the different teams in place to make BP2010 a reality. If you bump into of the BP organization team next weekend, just ask them how many emails and calls they get a day to make sure that the conference is running smoothly... and be prepared to be amazed. Based on some of the feedback from last year, the biggest thing we found was the young women who walked away feeling like they have learnt the most, were the ones who had given the conference some though before attending and had create a few meaningful relationships and connections that could help them in their personal journey. Sometimes being in a conference setting with that many people and schedules being thrown at you can be really overwhelming, so here's three tips to get the most out of the upcoming weekend:

1) Write like no one's watching

Write, write, write. Write down what you discover, what you can share, what you want to learn. Write what inspires you and contacts names and numbers. Write about each workshop that you attend, but sometimes, it's easy to forget everything you have learnt when jumping from one session to the next!

2) What is are your intentions

Have you thought about what you actually want to learn from this conference? Why are you there? What are your intentions.. is it to create connections? To learn more about yourself? To challenge yourself? When you think about these things, think about it in the context of: when the conference is over, what would be that one thing that I can walk away telling people I was proud to have accomplished.

And on that note, don't be selfish, and share as much as possible.

3) Define your brand and mark

The theme of the conference is "Make your Brand, Leave your Mark". Think about what it means to you, to have a brand and how it relates to your values and life. We're looking forward to getting to know as many brands as possible!

Also, do you know that if you can't attend the whole conference, BP is selling ticket for the Gala AND tradeshow seperately for much less? That's how badly we want you to attend.. even if it means you just being there for a small portion. Check it out here!

Vancouver Sun: Beyond Pink conference features 'power couple panel'

VANCOUVER - The first thing you notice is how young they are. And then you see how determined as well. They are Young Women in Business, a group of students, recent graduates and professionals who have joined forces to create opportunities to develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed on their own terms. And, as a group, they already have. This year, they are hosting their third-annual Beyond Pink conference, a two-day event for networking, speakers, panel discussions and inspiration that is expected to attract 250 participants. There is even a trade-show-like setting where exhibitors provide advice, not goods.

"We had never felt disadvantaged," explained one of the founders, Jennifer Sung. "But we knew that there were some unique differences in carving our career path that were not so apparent to our male peers."

The group collectively began to wonder why they had not been exposed to a conference that addressed the needs and interests of young women like them, Sung said.

So YWiB and Beyond Pink was born.

One of the issues being addressed this year is how couples really interact and balance their lives, careers and families, so they invited some of the city's busiest couples to tell them how to do that.

"Balance is something that everyone strives to find, and if you can see how everyone else is doing it, the pitfalls and the successes, and the tricks and ways to make it work [that really helps]," said Dani Waters, who is the speaker coordinator for the conference.

Three couples will sit on Beyond Pink's Power Couple Panel: Andrea and Nick Scott, owners of spa and facial company, Skoah; Nick Reiach Great Little Box Company vice-president, and Katie Dunsworth-Reiach, of Smart Cookies financial advisers and Spark PR co-founder; and Gayla Dehart of Achieve Excellence Professional Coaching Services and husband, John, Nurse Next Door co-founder.

"What really stood out to us was how many of our couples have children or are starting families and [we want to hear] how they are going through that transition," Waters said. "I strongly believe, or at least I strongly hope, that you can have it all, and I think all three of these couples are examples of people that really support each other and enable each other to do what they are doing."

Conference organizer Lindsey Smith agrees.

"There's been a stereotype in the past that you have to pick your family or your career," Smith said. "If you want to advance your career, be the CEO, means you won't be able to have children or spend any time with them. We're all pretty driven women, and we want everything, and it's pretty frightening being told you have to pick one of the other."

Waters attended Beyond Pink last year and "got such a big energy boost from seeing other women that were excited about life and excited about what they wanted."

This year's conference theme is "Make Your Brand. Leave Your Mark."

"We're all energetic and determined, but what am I good at?" Smith asked. "What do I sell people on? What makes me different from the people sitting beside me?"

Keynote speaker Michelle Rupp, principal of Lighthouse Leadership will speak on the challenges she's overcome and what made her stick out from the crowd.

Judy Brooks, who co-founded Blo Blow Dry Bar with her mother Judy, returns as a speaker as well to talk about adding value to personal interactions.

"Let's look beyond the package that may or may not be important," Brooks said. "Let's look at what you're leaving behind. That's what a mark is.

"When I leave the room, do I want somebody to remember what I was wearing or how I made them feel?" Brooks asked. "I want them to remember how I made them feel."

The conference is Nov. 19 and 20 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Vancouver.
